Pupillage Interviews (Part 2): Top Tips from Established Practitioners and Juniors at the Bar

Today’s blogpost is the second and final part of the “Top Tips for Pupillage Interviews” series. In case you missed it, the first part of the series included tips from eight silks.

The silks gave a "view from the top", and we will now hear from eight juniors and established practitioners at the Bar who have more recently been on the receiving end of the pupillage interview process.

A huge thank you to Sarah, Sahar, Narinder, Jennifer, Will, Mani, Mathias and Joel for their time and invaluable contributions.

Pupillage Interviews (Part 1): Top Tips from Eight Silks

Hi everyone!

I am immensely honoured because in today’s blogpost I collaborated with EIGHT silks who share their top tips for pupillage interviews.

We hope these help and we would love to hear from you if they do.

The Do's and Don'ts of Pupillage Applications

The Do's and Don'ts of Pupillage Applications

In today’s blogpost I asked six barristers and future pupil barristers to comment on one of my failed pupillage applications. I also analysed my own application because I used the lessons I learnt through not succeeding in my pupillage applications to understand how to to create a strong application for my training contract, and I was successful in joining Clifford Chance. I share snippets of my own application below for you to compare.

Essentially, the seven of us together share our “Do’s and Don’t of Pupillage Applications”. The barristers provide detailed tips on how to approach each of the pupillage gateway questions.

If you are an international (i.e. someone who requires a visa to work in the UK), you might find this article particularly useful as we have given very thorough details about what you need to know about applying for pupillage in the UK.

The cover letters that got me eight mini-pupillages

In today’s blogpost I share two of my own cover letters, which I tailored to every barrister’s chamber I applied to, and which helped me land eight mini-pupillages. I have of course completely decided to go into commercial and corporate law, but I was really interested in Trusts Law and Intellectual Property back in the day (just showcasing how important it is to gain experience to different areas of law as your perceptions about what you expected each of them to be like in practice can change).

For any aspiring barristers looking to apply for mini-pupillages, I hope these can serve as a useful guide when drafting your cover letter.
